Lyric Theatre Announces Summer Film Series, 6/23-26

It Happened One Night is a 1934 American romantic comedy film with elements of screwball comedy directed by Frank Capra, in which a pampered socialite (Claudette Colbert) tries to get out from under her father's thumb, and falls in love with a roguish reporter (Clark Gable). Ellie Andrews has just tied the knot with society aviator King Westley when she is whisked away to her father's yacht and out of King's clutches. Ellie jumps ship and eventually winds up on a bus headed back to her husband. Reluctantly she must accept the help of out-of- work reporter Peter Warne. Actually, Warne doesn't give her any choice: either she sticks with him until he gets her back to her husband, or he'll blow the whistle on Ellie to her father. Either way, Peter gets what (he thinks!) he wants .... a really juicy newspaper story.

THE SHINING

The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, co-written with novelist Diane Johnson, and starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. A writer, Jack Torrance, takes a job as an off-season caretaker at an isolated hotel. His young son possesses psychic abilities and is able to see things from the past and future, such as the ghosts who inhabit the hotel. Soon after settling in, the family is trapped in the hotel by a snowstorm, and Jack gradually becomes influenced by a supernatural presence; he descends into madness and attempts to murder his wife and son.

COOL HAND LUKE Summer of Free Movies June 30, 2012 at 4:00 PM July 1, 2012 at 2:00 PM Cool Hand Luke is a 1967 American prison drama film directed by Stuart Rosenberg and starring Paul Newman. The screenplay was adapted by Donn Pearce and Frank Pierson from Pearce's 1965 novel of the same name. The film features George Kennedy, Strother Martin, J.D. Cannon and Morgan Woodward. Luke Jackson is a cool, gutsy prisoner in a Southern chain gang, who, while refusing to buckle under to authority, keeps escaping and being recaptured. The prisoners admire Luke because, as Dragline explains it, "You're an original, that's what you are!" Nevertheless, the camp staff actively works to crush Luke until he finally breaks.

Humana Presents YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN Summer of Free Movies June 30, 2012 at 7:00 PM July 1, 2012 at 5:00 PM Young Frankenstein is a 1974 American comedy film directed by Mel Brooks and starring Gene Wilder as the title character, a descendant of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein. The supporting cast includes Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, Richard Haydn and Gene Hackman. The screenplay was written by Brooks and Wilder. A young neurosurgeon (Gene Wilder) inherits the castle of his grandfather, the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. In the castle he finds a funny hunchback called Igor, a pretty lab assistant named Inga and the old housekeeper, frau Blucher -iiiiihhh!-. Young Frankenstein believes that the work of his grandfather is only crap, but when he discovers the book where the mad doctor described his reanimation experiment, he suddenly changes his mind...

CADDYSHACK Dinner and a Movie June 30, 2012 at 6:00pm & 9:00pm Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Rodney Dangerfield star in this uproarious 1980 comedy about a dysfunctional country club with a serious gopher problem. The upscale members of an exclusive golf course are in for a wild ride when an audacious new member Al Czervik, played by Dangerfield, joins the club. Meanwhile, assistant Greenskeeper Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) is tasked with removing a certain dancing gopher that has made its home underneath the golf-course grass. And all young caddy Danny Noonan (Michael O’Keefe) wants to do is make enough money to go to college. Directed by Harold Ramis, Caddyshack takes golf to a whole new level, featuring side-splitting lines from some of the best comedians of all time in their prime.

The Lyric’s Flagler Center is located at 201 SW Flagler Avenue, in the former Flagler Park Recreation Center. The Lyric’s Flagler Center is a versatile multi-purpose venue that can be easily transformed into a black box theater, a dance club, a dinner theatre or an intimate concert setting. The Center is owned by the City of Stuart and is operated by the Lyric Theatre.
